How to Clean Your Oven Before Thanksgiving, and When to Do It

A clean open wall oven with polished racks beside a roasting dish and a bowl of cranberries

Plan to finish cleaning the oven several days before Thanksgiving, not the night before. A self-clean cycle can run for hours and the door stays locked until the oven cools, so the night before is the one day with no room for a mistake. The cleaning itself is simple. The calendar, and following your own oven's manual, are what make it work.

Instructions differ by brand and model. Your owner's manual overrides this page, and every statement below that comes from a manufacturer links to the page it came from.

An oven that is dirty on Thanksgiving morning is a problem you can smell. This guide is built around when to do each job and which choices matter. Where manufacturers disagree, we say so, because the right answer for your oven is whatever your manual says.

When should you clean the oven before Thanksgiving?

Our suggestion is to finish at least a few days before the meal. That is a recommendation, not a manufacturer rule, and here is what it rests on. GE says its self-clean cycle takes from one and a half hours to three hours, depending on the amount of soil. Frigidaire suggests a cleaning time of three hours or the medium soiled setting for a typical oven and says the door stays locked until the oven cools down. Whirlpool says the cycle time includes a 30-minute cool-down and that heavy soil results in longer cleaning and more smoke.

Add those together and a single cycle can take most of an afternoon, with an oven you cannot open until it cools. Working backward from the meal:

  • 7 to 10 days out: decide how the oven will be cleaned: self-clean cycle, by hand, or by someone else. If you want Happy Maids to clean inside the oven, our FAQ says to ask at least one business day ahead, so ask early.
  • 3 to 5 days out: run the self-clean cycle, or clean by hand.
  • 2 days out: wipe out any ash or residue and put the racks back.
  • The day before: leave the oven alone.
  • After dinner: wipe up spills once the oven has cooled.

Should you use the self-clean cycle or clean the oven by hand?

Use the self-clean cycle only if your oven has one and your manual says how to run it. Clean by hand if your oven does not have the feature, if it has a different lower-heat cleaning mode, or if a bird lives in the house. Whirlpool describes the cycle this way: very high temperatures, burning soil to a powdery ash. GE puts the oven temperature at about 880 degrees Fahrenheit and says the leftover ash wipes out easily with a wet cloth.

Before a cycle, Whirlpool's self-clean guide asks you to:

  • Remove the oven racks, broiler pan, grid, cookware and bakeware, and any foil
  • Wipe out loose soil first
  • Hand-clean the inside edge of the door and the 1½ inch area around the cavity frame, without moving or bending the gasket, because that area does not get hot enough to clean itself
  • Keep the kitchen well ventilated and the oven vents unblocked
  • Remove plastic items from the cooktop
  • Close the door completely, or the door will not lock and the cycle will not start

GE adds that it does not recommend lining the shelves or floor with foil or silicone mats, and that foil, liners and mats left in during a cycle can damage the oven. Whirlpool also notes that porcelain may discolor, lose gloss, hairline-crack or pop during heating and cooling, which it calls normal.

Some ovens also have a lower-heat steam clean for light soil. GE's version is to pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of a cool oven and run a cycle of about 30 minutes. Steps vary by brand, so follow your manual.

Do the racks come out for a self-clean cycle?

It depends on the brand, which is why the manual matters more than any article. What the manufacturers say:

If you do not know which kind of rack you have, take them out. For racks that stick afterward, Whirlpool says a light coating of vegetable oil on the rack guides helps them slide, and Bosch suggests wiping the rack edges with a small amount of vegetable oil, then wiping off the excess.

What about pet birds during a self-clean cycle?

Take the warning seriously. Whirlpool says exposure to the fumes may result in the death of certain birds and to always move birds to another closed and well-ventilated room. Samsung says fumes from self-cleaning can be harmful to birds and to keep them in a well-ventilated area away from the oven.

In a home with a bird, cleaning by hand is the more conservative choice. That is our opinion rather than a manufacturer instruction, so check your manual and ask your veterinarian if you are unsure.

How do you clean an oven by hand?

Start with the mildest method your manufacturer describes. Whirlpool recommends a mixture of liquid detergent or all-purpose cleaner and water, wiped with a soft, damp cloth once the oven cavity is cool. For difficult soil, it suggests a nonabrasive scrub sponge or eraser-style cleaning pad, without cleaners. GE says frequent wiping with mild soap and water will prolong the time between major cleanings.

For the oven door, GE lists a soap and water solution, a vinegar and water solution (1/4 cup vinegar to 2 quarts water), or a baking soda and water paste. Samsung describes the same idea for the glass: mix baking soda and water into a paste, then wipe it off with white vinegar.

What should you never put in an oven you are about to cook in?

Oven cleaner is the big one, and the manufacturers are firm about it for self-cleaning ovens. GE says no commercial oven cleaner or oven liner of any kind should be used in or around any part of the self-clean oven. Samsung says commercial oven cleaners or liners should never be used in or around any part of the oven. Whirlpool's range guide says simply do not use oven cleaners, because foods react with porcelain at high temperatures and can cause staining, etching, pitting or white spots.

GE does allow a cleaner made for ovens on a manual-clean oven, following the label instructions. That is the reason to check what kind of oven you own before you buy anything.

Other things to leave out: foil, silicone mats and liners during a cycle (GE, Whirlpool), and any cloth or cleaner on the gasket.

What if you would rather not clean the oven yourself?

Happy Maids offers cleaning inside the oven as an extra. Our FAQ page lists "inside the oven" among the extras, says extras are arranged ahead of the visit and priced separately, asks that you ask at least one business day ahead, and notes that extras cannot be added on the cleaning day itself. If you have booked an oven clean, it says to run the self-clean cycle a day earlier, not that morning. If you would rather a specific product was used, leave it out and tell the office.

The simplest way to arrange it is to tell the office when you book. You can call 847-382-0082, or use the free estimate tool to describe the home first. Our room-by-room checklist shows what a visit covers and what is an extra.

If the whole kitchen needs attention before the holiday, a deep cleaning hand-washes the surfaces a regular visit only dusts, and our house cleaning service covers the rest of the house around it. We have been cleaning homes in Barrington and the surrounding towns since 1985.

What else in the kitchen is worth doing before holiday cooking?

The oven is the biggest job, but not the only surface that shows on the day. Three more guides on this site cover the rest:

How do you keep the oven clean after Thanksgiving dinner?

Wipe up spills once the oven has cooled. Whirlpool says the spill should be wiped up after the oven cools, and that food spills containing acids like vinegar and tomato should be cleaned as soon as the appliance is cool. Regular light cleaning matters because, in Whirlpool's words, performing regular light oven cleaning after a spill will help avoid soil build-up, and heavy soil is what makes a self-clean cycle longer and smokier.

Where did these instructions come from?

Every manufacturer statement above comes from the company's own support pages, which we read in full before using them:

Frequently asked questions

Can you run the self-clean cycle the night before Thanksgiving?

We would not. GE says its cycle takes from one and a half hours to three hours depending on the soil, Frigidaire says the door stays locked until the oven cools down, and Whirlpool says the cycle time includes a 30-minute cool-down. A delay could leave you without an oven you need, so finish at least a few days early.

How long does a self-clean cycle take?

It depends on the brand and model, so check your manual. GE says one and a half hours to three hours, depending on the amount of soil. Frigidaire suggests three hours or the medium soiled setting for a typical oven. Whirlpool gives no single length but says heavy soil results in longer cleaning and more smoke.

Do you have to take the racks out for a self-clean cycle?

It depends on the brand. Whirlpool says always remove oven racks. GE says remove racks except "no scrub" or "self-clean" racks. Samsung says porcelain-coated racks can remain, but nickel ones should be removed. Bosch says do not leave racks in. If you are unsure, take them out and check your manual.

Can you use commercial oven cleaner on a self-cleaning oven?

No, according to the manufacturers we checked. GE says no commercial oven cleaner or oven liner of any kind should be used in or around any part of the self-clean oven, and Samsung says commercial oven cleaners should never be used in or around any part of the oven. Whirlpool's range guide says do not use oven cleaners. GE does allow a cleaner made for ovens on a manual-clean oven, following the label.

What do you do after the self-clean cycle finishes?

Wait for the oven to cool and the door to unlock. Then wipe out the ash. GE says the leftover ash wipes out easily with a wet cloth, and Whirlpool says to let the range cool, then wipe out excess ash. Whirlpool also says porcelain may discolor, lose gloss, hairline-crack or pop during heating and cooling, which it calls normal.

What should you do about pet birds when cleaning the oven?

Move them away from the kitchen. Whirlpool says exposure to the fumes may result in the death of certain birds and to move birds to another closed, well-ventilated room. Samsung says fumes from self-cleaning can be harmful to birds. Cleaning by hand avoids the cycle altogether.

Can you clean oven door glass with baking soda?

Two manufacturers list it. GE lists a baking soda and water paste for the door interior, and Samsung describes a baking soda and water paste wiped off with white vinegar for the glass. Keep water and cleaner off the gasket: GE says it can deteriorate.

Does Happy Maids clean inside the oven?

Yes, as an extra. Our FAQ page lists "inside the oven" among the extras, which are arranged ahead of the visit and priced separately. Ask at least one business day ahead, because extras cannot be added on the cleaning day itself. If you book an oven clean, run the self-clean cycle a day earlier, not that morning.

How much does it cost to have the oven cleaned?

Happy Maids does not publish a price for it. Extras are priced separately because they add real time. Call 847-382-0082 or use the free estimate tool and ask for the oven to be included.
