What to Clean Before Holiday Guests Arrive, Thanksgiving to New Year's

A bright dining room with the table set for guests, evergreen sprigs in the center and a tidy sitting area beyond

Clean the rooms guests will actually use, in this order: the entry, the guest bathroom, the kitchen, then the room where people sit. Do the slow jobs early and the visible ones last. This season the plan runs three times, for Thanksgiving on November 26, Christmas on December 25 and New Year's Day.

Instructions differ by brand and model. Your owner's manual and product labels override this page, and every statement below that comes from an agency or a manufacturer links to the page it came from.

Updated October 2026 for this year's holiday calendar. First published as a shorter checklist.

A holiday gathering asks three things of a house: let people in without a pile of coats and bags, feed them from a kitchen that is clean and safe, and give them a bathroom where nothing needs explaining. This guide follows that order, and it follows the calendar, because the 2026 season has three separate dates rather than one.

What should you clean before holiday guests arrive?

Clean the four places guests occupy, and let the rest wait. That ranking is our own judgment, built on where guests stand, sit and wash their hands. The sourced details for each place follow in the sections below.

  • The entry. Clear one place for coats and bags so the floor stays open. Wipe the door handle and the light switch, since the CDC lists light switches, doorknobs, and countertops as high-touch surfaces to clean regularly, including after you have visitors.
  • The guest bathroom. Sink, toilet, mirror and floor, with soap at every sink guests might use.
  • The kitchen. A clean counter and sink, and a refrigerator with room in it.
  • The room where people sit and eat. The table, the hard floors, and the surfaces hands land on.

Rooms guests will not enter can wait until January. If you are short on time, our guide to cleaning a house fast covers the last hour before the doorbell.

When should you start for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's?

Work back from the date, and book any help first. The Office of Personnel Management lists Thanksgiving Day as Thursday, November 26, and Christmas Day as Friday, December 25 for 2026, and New Year's Day as Friday, January 1, 2027, which makes New Year's Eve a Thursday.

If you want Happy Maids involved, our FAQ says that around major holidays the schedule fills fast, so aim for two weeks ahead if your date matters. Counting back two weeks gives these dates, which are our arithmetic and not a promise of availability:

  • Thanksgiving, November 26: ask by Thursday, November 12.
  • Christmas, December 25: ask by Friday, December 11.
  • New Year's Eve, December 31: ask by Thursday, December 17.

For the work you do yourself, we suggest this rhythm for each date:

  • A week or more out: clear and clean the refrigerator, scrub the guest bathroom, and request any extras.
  • Two or three days out: do the floors and wipe the high-touch surfaces.
  • The day before: set out the table, put soap and towels in the guest bathroom, and clear the entry.
  • The morning of: wipe the counters, empty the bins, and walk through as a visitor would.

How do you make room in the refrigerator before the big meal?

Start from the turkey, because it sets the schedule. The CDC says to allow about 24 hours of thawing for each 4 to 5 pounds of turkey in the refrigerator. By that arithmetic a 20-pound bird needs four to five days, so the shelf has to be free well before Thanksgiving week begins.

The CDC also says to keep the turkey in its wrapping and set it in a container, because the container will prevent the turkey juice from dripping on other food. Two more points matter once the refrigerator fills up:

To clear it out, GE Appliances says to remove everything from both freezer and refrigerator, discard expired or old items, and wash refrigerator and freezer shelves and drawers in warm, soapy water, then dry them thoroughly. If you would rather not do it yourself, inside the refrigerator is an extra with Happy Maids. Our FAQ says to ask at least one business day ahead.

What should the kitchen look like on the day?

On the day, the kitchen's first job is safety and its second is appearance. The CDC says to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling turkey and to wash cutting boards, utensils, dishes, and countertops with hot soapy water after preparing raw turkey. For the other dishes, it advises washing utensils, cutting boards, and countertops with hot, soapy water after preparing each food item.

One habit surprises people. The CDC notes that federal agencies have recommended not washing turkey or chicken since 2005, because washing raw turkey can spread germs to other food. Skip the rinse, and the sink stays cleaner for the next dish.

If the oven is still on your list, our guide to cleaning your oven before Thanksgiving lays out the timeline and what each manufacturer says. Inside the oven is also an extra with Happy Maids, on the same one-business-day notice.

What makes a guest bathroom ready?

A guest bathroom is ready when every sink guests might use has soap, and the high-touch surfaces are clean. The CDC says to scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds and to wash them before and after eating and after using the toilet. If soap and water are not available, it says an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol can be used.

For the surfaces, the CDC advises that you use household cleaners that contain soap or detergent to remove germs and dirt. If you also choose to disinfect, the CDC says to clean surfaces before you disinfect them and to always read and follow the directions on the label, including the contact time, which is how long the product must stay on the surface.

How should you care for wood floors before a crowd?

Dust-mop finished wood floors and keep water away from them. The National Wood Flooring Association says to sweep hardwood once a day and to use mops with wide heads that trap dust without making micro scratches in the floor’s finish. It also says not to use wet mops or steam mops on your wood floors, because the moisture can damage the finish and may even harm the wood after a while.

For spills during the party, the same page says to clean up spills or any other moisture right away and describes a damp cotton or microfiber cloth as ideal for spot cleaning. Your flooring manufacturer's care sheet is the final word for your particular finish.

What should you do with leftovers and the morning after?

Put the food away on a timer. University of Illinois Extension says leftover food should be refrigerated or frozen within two hours of serving, and its turkey guidance suggests setting a timer to put leftovers in the refrigerator within 2 hours. The CDC gives the same two-hour limit and adds that the refrigerator should be 40°F or colder.

Then reset the kitchen. Wash the boards, utensils and counters with hot soapy water as above, and leave the larger job for the next visit. If you are wondering how to thank a crew that helped before or after the gathering, our guide on tipping a house cleaner at Christmas answers it.

Which jobs can Happy Maids add to a holiday clean?

Several of the jobs hosts ask for are extras rather than part of a standard visit. Our FAQ lists them as arranged ahead of time and priced separately, and says extras cannot be added on the cleaning day itself, because the time has to be in the schedule:

  • Inside the refrigerator
  • Inside the oven
  • Interior windows, within reach of a step ladder
  • Inside cabinets, emptied first
  • Vacuuming inside a sofa
  • Changing bed linens, charged per bed
  • Cleaning a finished basement or lower level

Making a bed is part of the cleaning and carries no charge, while changing the linens is the extra. For the room-by-room list of what is standard and what is detailed, see our house cleaning checklist.

If the house has not been professionally cleaned recently, the FAQ says Happy Maids suggests starting with a deep clean if you are new to us or have not had a service in more than two months, and adds that if the home has been kept up, we will say so and start you on regular service. Our deep cleaning page explains what that visit covers.

What will a cleaning service not do before a party?

Knowing the limits in advance saves a surprise on the day. Our FAQ lists these as outside the service, so plan another way to handle them:

  • Washing walls or ceilings, and chandeliers
  • Anything above the second step of a step ladder
  • Exterior windows, patios and decks
  • Carpet cleaning and steam cleaning
  • Laundry and folding
  • Moving large or heavy furniture, or lifting above 25 pounds
  • Sorting, organizing or decluttering
  • Inside china cabinets, stocked closets or drawers, and inside the dishwasher

The practical consequence is that the tidying, the laundry and the clearing of clutter are yours to do before the crew arrives, so the cleaning time goes to cleaning.

What if you only have a few hours?

Keep the same order and stop when the time is gone: entry, guest bathroom, kitchen, then the sitting room. Finish each room before moving to the next, and close the doors on the rooms you did not reach. Our guide to cleaning a house fast describes the sequence professionals follow when time is short.

Is a recurring plan easier than three separate pushes?

It can be. The idea behind a standing schedule is that each holiday starts from a house that is already kept up, which is the reasoning behind our guide to keeping a home guest-ready without the panic. You can read more about our house cleaning service, or call and describe your dates.

If the house also needs getting ready for the heating season, see our fall cleaning checklist. For dust in a closed-up house, see our guide to air purifiers and dust.

Where did these instructions come from?

Every instruction above comes from the organization's own page, which we read in full before using it:

Pages change and every home is different, so your appliance manuals, product labels and flooring care sheets come first.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I book a cleaning before Thanksgiving?

Aim for two weeks ahead if your date matters. Our FAQ says that around major holidays the schedule fills fast. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26 this year, which puts that two-week mark at Thursday, November 12. Extras such as the oven or refrigerator also need at least one business day of notice.

Can I add oven or refrigerator cleaning on the day of my clean?

No. Our FAQ says extras cannot be added on the cleaning day itself, because the time has to be in the schedule. Inside the oven and inside the refrigerator are both on the list of extras, and the FAQ asks you to ask at least one business day ahead.

How long does a turkey take to thaw in the refrigerator?

The CDC says to allow about 24 hours of thawing for each 4 to 5 pounds of turkey. For a 20-pound turkey that works out to four to five days. The CDC also says to never thaw your turkey by leaving it out on the counter.

Should I wash the turkey before cooking it?

No. The CDC says that federal agencies have recommended not washing turkey or chicken since 2005, and that washing raw turkey can spread germs to other food. It does advise washing your hands, cutting boards, utensils, dishes and countertops after handling raw turkey.

How long can holiday leftovers stay in the refrigerator?

University of Illinois Extension says to use refrigerated leftover food within 3-4 days, or within 3 to 4 months if frozen, and to refrigerate or freeze them within two hours of serving. It advises reheating leftovers to a minimum of 165 F.

Can I wet-mop my hardwood floors before guests arrive?

Not according to the National Wood Flooring Association. It says not to use wet mops or steam mops on your wood floors, because the moisture can damage the finish. It recommends a dust mop for daily care and a damp cotton or microfiber cloth for spot cleaning. Your flooring maker's care sheet is the final word.

Does Happy Maids change the sheets in the guest room?

Changing linens is an extra, charged per bed. Our FAQ says making a bed is part of the cleaning and carries no charge, while changing the linens is the extra. Laundry and folding are not part of our service, so have the clean linens ready, and ask at least one business day ahead.

Will a holiday clean remove hard water film from shower glass?

Not in one visit. Our FAQ lists heavy mineral buildup on glass or tile in a single visit among the things Happy Maids does not do, so heavy buildup should not be expected to disappear before your guests arrive.

Will the cleaners wash my chandelier or the outside windows?

No. Our FAQ lists washing walls or ceilings, and chandeliers and exterior windows, patios and decks as outside the service, along with anything above the second step of a step ladder. Interior windows within reach of a step ladder are available as an extra.
