Happy Maids has cleaned houses in Arlington Heights — ZIPs 60004 and 60005 — since 1985, from our office in Lake Barrington. 1985 is also the year the Village shut down its deep wells for good. Arlington Heights has been on Lake Michigan water ever since — treated at Evanston’s plant, piped west by the Northwest Water Commission — and it arrives at roughly 8 grains per gallon. So the haze on shower glass in Ivy Hill or Terramere is soap and body oil, not the chalky crust of a well-water town, and it stays invisible until light catches it at an angle. Anything acidic is the wrong answer for that film: on a 1965 glazed tile bath it is how you dull the finish permanently. What lifts it is an alkaline degreaser given time to sit, then a rinse and a dry pass.

The village also filled in almost all at once — 8,768 residents in 1950, 65,058 by 1970, and then no land left. The median build year is about 1974, and whole subdivisions came from a single builder in a single push: roughly 800 Meister-Neiberg homes in Ivy Hill, about 250 Catino ranches, colonials and Cape Cods north of Kirchhoff, Terramere from Kennedy Homes in the early 1980s, Arlington North from Stoltzner. Once you have cleaned one house on those streets you know the layout of the next. It also means original 1960s and 70s ceramic tile over grout that was never sealed, oak strip and parquet laid before polyurethane was standard, and pre-1980 textured ceilings — all of which want restraint rather than pressure.

Then there are the two edges. Downtown around the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre and the Metra platform is genuinely vertical — Arlington Town Square, Village Green, Dunton Tower — where a clean means a certificate of insurance on file with the association, a freight elevator reservation, and somewhere other than a driveway to put the van. East of Wilke in Virginia Terrace it is the opposite: a new 4,000-square-foot house standing next to a 1955 ranch. Up at Lake Arlington Towne residents walk the two-mile path around Lake Arlington daily, and all of it comes back in through the back door — which is exactly why we send the same background-checked team to the same house whenever we can.
