There is a sump pit in the corner of our basement. What do you do about it?
We clean around it, never into it. An open or lidded pit, often two pumps and a battery backup box on the wall beside it, is standard in a Des Plaines lower level. Mop water and bucket rinse never go in — the silt settles on the float and the pump pays for it later. We vacuum and wipe the floor around it, keep the lid and the discharge line clear of stored boxes, and leave the pit itself alone.
Our basement windows are glass block. Can those be cleaned?
Yes, and they take a different tool. The mortar joints between the blocks catch dust and cobwebs and cannot be wiped smooth — a cloth skates across the face and misses them, so those joints get brushed. Our house went through the O’Hare sound insulation program and we never open the windows. Does that change the cleaning?
It changes what needs the attention. Acoustic windows, solid-core doors and central air fitted so nobody has to open a window make a house that does not breathe, and a house that does not breathe recirculates its dust instead of losing it. We give vent covers, cold-air returns, window tracks and the tops of door casings real attention in these homes, plus the cabinet faces and the ceiling above the range, where cooking grease now lands instead of going outside.
What is the chalky white bloom on our basement wall?
That is efflorescence — mineral pushed out through the concrete by moisture migrating through the wall. It is not dirt, and scrubbing it with water makes it worse, so we leave it and tell you what it is instead of smearing it around. The same honesty applies to a musty lower level: that is a humidity problem, and perfuming over it helps nobody.
Do you bring cleaning supplies?
Yes — products, cloths and sealed-HEPA SEBO vacuums, all included. Green, kid- and pet-safe products are the default on every visit, not an upgrade you pay extra for.
