Floyd Falese bought Sleepy Hollow Farm in 1953 and refused to build a grid, hiring landscape architect Raymond Hazekamp to lay out meandering roads with no curbs and no sidewalks that wound into cul-de-sacs without felling a tree. On lots of at least half an acre he put Scholz designs — floor-to-ceiling glass walls, sliding doors, vaulted ceilings with exposed beams — so there is far more glass here than in a comparable colonial, and beams and ledges that hold dust the way flat drywall never does. The first section was the flats east of Sleepy Hollow Road, the only sewered part of the village; west of it the split-levels, tri-levels and walkouts step into the slope over English basements. Saddle Club Estates, Surrey Ridge, Deer Creek and The Bluffs came with the 1980s and 1990s annexations.
Then it stopped. The median house here was built in 1979 and the census counts zero vacant units — a village finished, owned and staying put, with Sleepy Hollow Elementary on Glen Oak Drive still the only school in it. The median age is 52 and about fifteen percent work from home, so our teams often clean around someone: we work room by room in a set order, which keeps one part of the house quiet while we are in another. Our house smells like woodsmoke after the fall burn weekends. Can you get that out?
We remove what the smoke leaves behind and reduce the smell, but we do not erase it. Ash and soot come off sills, ledges, trim, hard floors and hand-washed surfaces, while the odor itself lives in upholstery, drapes, bedding, carpet and the furnace filter. Our sealed-HEPA SEBO vacuums trap fine ash rather than blowing it back into the room, a linen change is a scheduled add-on, and a fresh furnace filter after the burn weekends does more than anything we could spray.
There is gray ash on our windowsills and door tops every fall. Is that part of a regular clean?
Yes. Windowsills, ledges, blinds, horizontal trim and the tops of door frames are cleaned on every visit, and in October we expect them to be worse than usual. Ash gets washed with a damp microfiber rather than dry-dusted, because a dry cloth just spreads it into a film. If the burn weekends hit your house hard, tell the office and it goes on the job notes for the fall.
Our house has a whole wall of glass and sliding doors. Do you clean those?
Yes, with one boundary worth knowing up front. Interior windows and glass within step-ladder reach are a scheduled add-on rather than part of a standard visit, tracks and sills included — in a Scholz house built around glass, most people put it on the plan permanently. Exterior glass we do not do at all, and nothing above a two-step ladder either, so a beam in a vaulted room is a job for someone with proper equipment. We say that before the day rather than after.
