A Wynstone estate and a Biltmore lake house do not clean the same way

Happy Maids has cleaned houses in North Barrington — ZIP 60010 — since 1985, from our office in Lake Barrington, minutes from the village. Start with what nearly every house here shares: a private well and septic. Iron and hard water leave rust-tinted spotting on shower glass, faucets, stainless and toilet bowls even in softened homes, so those surfaces get a detailed scrub every visit instead of a wipe-and-go. Established buildup comes off gradually, over several visits — we will not use the harsh chemicals or abrasive pads that permanently etch glass and tile. We are careful about what goes down the drain on a septic system, too.

The village hands us two very different jobs. Inside Wynstone, the gated 750-acre community built around Illinois’ only Jack Nicklaus Signature course, houses run from 3,000 to well past 11,000 square feet, on private roads behind a 24-hour gatehouse. Biltmore is the older side, platted in 1926 around Honey Lake and the country club, so one street holds 1930s lake cottages with original hardwood and trim next to near-10,000-square-foot rebuilds. Old millwork gets finish-safe products and no standing water. And because Timberlake Estates, Timbercreek and the Grassy Lake shoreline sit right on the water, summer humidity keeps working on bathroom grout and shower corners between visits.

Acre-plus wooded lots push tree pollen and fine dust along long runs of trim and railings, and on the equestrian properties in Grassmere Farms and Old Barrington Estates, barn dust, hay and boots come straight into the mudroom. Families here are mostly in Barrington 220, the eastern edge of the village in Lake Zurich District 95, and most are out when we arrive — so we work on coded or keyed access with the same background-checked team whenever we can, which also means the guard at the gate is not meeting strangers every visit.
