Happy Maids has cleaned houses in Cary — ZIP 60013 — since 1985, from our office in Lake Barrington. The fact we plan around is published by the town itself: the Village of Cary draws its water from nine municipal wells and states the hardness as 24 to 27 grains, attributing it to the gravel in the soil. The village does not soften it, so what the well gives is what arrives at the fixture. That is the white film back on shower glass within days of a wipe-down; it comes off a layer at a time over several visits, never with anything harsh enough to etch the glass. The same water carries iron at 0.18 ppm and manganese at 18 ppb, which is the orange-brown ring at the toilet waterline. Scale is white and iron stain is not, so a Cary bathroom often has both.

That gravel is not an abstraction: 22-acre Lake Atwood in The Hollows is a flooded gravel pit. The median house here was built in 1985, and Cary Country Club describes the terrain as rolling hills with dramatic elevation changes. So much of the stock is split-levels, tri-levels and walkouts: more floors, more stairs and more bathrooms than a flat-lot suburb. The older half, around Bright Oaks and Fox Trails, still has original fiberglass and cultured-marble tub surrounds and forty years of grout drinking minerals. The newer half has large glass enclosures, granite and stainless, which show film fastest and forgive it least.

Not every 60013 address is on that system: Trout Valley, Oakwood Hills and unincorporated Cary sit outside village limits on private wells, so what builds on porcelain there runs rust-orange rather than white — same library and same Cary-Grove community, different bathroom job. Then the season: the village salts 77 miles of street with a brine blend that includes beet juice, which stains whatever it is tracked onto, so entry tile, grout and hardwood get real attention from November through March.
