Happy Maids has cleaned houses in Port Barrington — ZIP 60010 — since 1985, from our office in Lake Barrington. The village has no municipal water system, so nearly every house is on a private well and hardness and iron staining are a house-by-house question rather than a town fact. The other constant is the river. When the Fox drops, what comes back in on boots is fine gray silt — slick, greasy, nothing like the grit off a driveway — and it keeps arriving for weeks after the water is gone. It holds in entry tile, grout lines and the edge of the hardwood, so we mop hard floors in detail and start at the entries, mats and stair nosings.

The larger half of the village is twenty-five years old. About 200 homes sit on quarter-acre lots along the man-made Nielsen Channels that Tyra Due Nielsen began dredging in 1923 — the original section, still Fox River Valley Gardens to anyone here before the 2002 name change. Three streets away, roughly 380 houses went up between 1997 and 2007: RiverWalk’s 262, Deer Grove’s 39, The Moorings’ 16 one-acre sites and the 36 condominiums at Port Barrington Shores. A channel cottage and a RiverWalk two-story are not the same visit.

The channels have one permitted opening to the Fox, so the water behind the original section sits still and fishes well twelve months a year. That makes the water-side door the working door — wet nets in July, boot mud and auger slush in January, all on the same few feet of tile — so we start a channel-house visit there rather than at the door with the address on it. There has been no village police department since 2009 and no local non-emergency desk to smooth over an alarm that trips mid-visit, so we work on coded or keyed access with the same background-checked team whenever we can.
