Happy Maids has cleaned houses in Fox River Grove — ZIPs 60010 and 60021 — since 1985, and our office is a few minutes east in Lake Barrington. The village pumps its own water from four shallow dolomite wells and does not soften it, so glass and chrome film back quickly in a house without a working softener. Where the softener has fallen behind, what shows in bowls and tub rims is orange-brown mineral staining rather than white film, and that takes a rust-specific product rather than a general bathroom cleaner. Either way it comes off a layer at a time, over several visits.

Almost nothing here is new. One house in five predates 1940 — 364 of 1,787 — and seventeen homes went up in the whole village between 2010 and 2024. The old core is cottages the Czech and Bohemian families built into the south-bank slopes, and their names are still on the street signs — Opatrny, Dvorak, Welisek — as the Village’s own history records. The grout is original and porous and the tub finishes have softened, so we say which marks are dirt and which are the age of the surface. Up on the flatter upland, Foxmoor, Hunter’s Farm, Victoria Woods and Fox Glen are colonials, split-levels and ranches built between about 1978 and 2005 on quarter- to half-acre lots.

The village straddles the county line: most of it is McHenry County, while Hunter’s Farm and Victoria Woods are Lake County, on Barrington 220 schools. The grove drops leaf litter and pollen from March through November, then steep, heavily treated streets send salt and sand in from November to April, and on the north-facing slopes it arrives wet and holds. Front doors here sit at the top or the bottom of a flight of outdoor steps, so equipment gets carried rather than wheeled, twice a visit — we build that into the time.
