Cottages that got winterized, and new builds two miles away

Happy Maids has cleaned houses in Wauconda — ZIP 60084 — since 1985, from our office in Lake Barrington. Start with the water: the village ran on its own wells until October 3, 2019, then switched to Lake Michigan water at about 8 grains of hardness. A house that lived through the well years carries orange-brown iron staining in tubs and bowls. That is not soap scum and not limescale, which is why a general bathroom spray does nothing to it — it comes off a layer at a time over several visits, and we will not use anything harsh enough to etch glass or dull a glaze to force it faster. A newer house that never met the well water shows a mild film around fixtures instead. Two deposits, two products.

A lot of Wauconda houses started as somebody’s summer place. The Wauconda Township Historical Society records cottages built from reused hotel lumber in 1928, and veterans moving into them year-round after the war. Those houses still stand near Main Street and out around Slocum Lake, carrying decades of additions — more doorways, trim runs and corners than the floor plan suggests. Two miles out on Gilmer Road, Liberty Lakes is over 800 homes built since 2003, and about a third of the town’s housing is attached: Lakepointe is 194 condominium units on the lake and Highland Terrace is 62 three-level townhomes.

Bangs Lake sits in the middle of all of it — 306 acres, two marinas and the public beach at Phil’s Beach. Memorial Day to Labor Day that means sand, lake muck and wet towels through the door most days, and the bluff drops twenty to twenty-five feet, so lakeside lower levels stay damp. Most of the day our team is in the house and you are not, which is why every cleaner working here is our own background-checked W-2 employee, and we send the same familiar team whenever we can.
