Excessive humidity can cause mold to grow on your carpets and other areas in your home. While carpet mold may not be too dangerous unless it truly gets out of hand, it’s definitely not a pleasant sight to behold. But how do you get rid of carpet mold?

If you suspect mold may be growing on your carpets, reach out to the leading professional home cleaning near Barrington as soon as possible. While you could get rid of carpet mold yourself with the methods we’ll discuss in this article, it’s better to have competent experts make sure that the mold never comes back. Read on!

How long does it take for mold to grow on wet carpet?

If you’ve recently experienced water damage, you probably want to know how quickly mold can grow on your carpets and other surfaces in your home. Unfortunately, the short answer would be very quickly. Some types of mold can start to grow within 24-48 hours of the surface getting wet.

Naturally, how fast mold will appear in your home will depend on several factors:

  • How long has the surface been in contact with the water?
  • How humid is your home in general?
  • Do you have good ventilation?

When carpets are concerned, the speed with which the mold can grow is likely to be higher than with some other surfaces. The dust, dirt, and particles of organic matter present on your carpets are perfect for mold to use as food. Just add some moisture and oxygen and you get the ideal conditions for mold growth.

How do you treat mold under carpet

You can use several different agents to get rid of mold on your carpets. Some of them are more aggressive, such as bleach, Lysol or ammonia, while others, like vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda are more gentle and less toxic. No matter which agents you use, it’s highly advisable that you don’t mix any of them together.

Depending on the severity of your mold problem, you can use the less toxic mold-killing products in the following way:

  • Less serious mold situations can be successfully dealt with by sprinkling some baking soda on the mold-infested area, leaving it overnight and vacuuming it the next morning.
  • You can spray white vinegar over the moldy spot and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Just make sure to scrub it with a brush before it dries. Blow dry once you’re done.
  • After you’ve removed the infestation with one of these methods, you can pick up any remaining mold spores with a HEPA vacuum to prevent them from spreading again.

However, if you have mold under the carpet, getting rid of the mold on the surface fibers won’t be enough. In that case, you would need to use more agressive cleaning products which can penetrate through to the roots and kill the mold that sits underneath. If the padding beneath is moldy, take it out and replace it.

How do you get rid of mold smell in carpet?

When trying to eradicate the mold from your carpets completely, you need to wear protection even if you use non-toxic cleaning products. By wearing a respirator, protective goggles, and rubber gloves you will protect yourself from inhaling potentially dangerous mold spores.

Using appropriate mold-killing agents and replacing the padding will not only ensure that the mold won’t return, but it will also help to remove the lingering mold smell. If you want to get rid of the musty smell completely, you should also dry and vacuum the carpets thoroughly.
